Right now it is easier than ever to feel overwhelmed. If you care about people, planet, wellbeing, friends, animals, or anything really then it's easy to feel like things are turning for the worst. You aren't wrong to feel that way, but that doesn't mean it's time to give up hope on making a difference. In fact, persisting, taking small steps, and making small impacts is the way through.
One of the best ways to make an impact is at home and in your immediate surroundings. Not everyone has a huge yard to make a massive garden, but most of us have some small space inside or outside that we can devote to growing a plant. Every pot of soil and every plant becomes a living companion and a complete ecosystem on a microscopic level. If you can covert part of all of your lawn or patio into a thriving green space then you also make a home for birds, pollinators, other insects, and a welcoming healing environment for yourself and your family. Gardens are an amazing way to have an impact.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't easy to grow a garden. Still it can become one of the most effective ways to make positive change in your own life and send positive energy out into the world. Gardens link us to living systems, they provide food and shelter, and they offer healing. All of these things are uplifting in times of struggle. Gardens can also be a way to become less dependent on failing systems and become more interdependent on friends, neighbors, and local community.
Gardens are a way that you can make a small change every day. From pruning your plants to sharing fruits and flowers with friends, gardens allow each of us to make a small positive impact every day. Taking small steps in action for a better planet is how we will achieve transformative change. Waiting around for a savior or some perfect be all end all solution actually just keeps us stagnant. Taking small steps everyday to make our planet a healthier, greener, and more flourishing place for all life is charting a path to a livable future.
I can personally say that seeing the transformation at my home from a concrete patio to a thriving ecosystems gives me tremendous joy everyday. It isn't rare for us to see hummingbirds, orioles, and dragonflies every day. We get to eat fresh herbs and tomatoes in the summer and enjoy lettuce and spinach in the fall. We are enemoured with life at our doorstep and inspired to protect it and support life systems around us. We all depend on this green earth to thrive. We are also all part of protecting it. It doesn't have to be difficult. We can plant a tree, grow some herbs, compost our kitchen scraps, or make a pollinator garden. It won't save the world, but it will get us moving in the right direction. Movement is what matters. Keep the flow and we will move downstream to a better world little by little.
